Accounts Receivable vs Accounts Payable

Learn · Part 1 of 3

🎯 Learning objective

Compare Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable, identify the control risks of each, and apply the distinction in a realistic AP situation.

⚡ The answer

AP manages supplier obligations the company owes; AR manages customer amounts owed to the company.

AP and AR are opposite sides of cash flow. AP focuses on liabilities and outgoing payments; AR focuses on receivables and incoming collections. A company may be both a customer and supplier to the same counterparty, but the records should remain separately supported.

💡 Why it matters

The difference between Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable matters because poor handling can lead to concealing balances or misclassifying assets and liabilities. A controlled, documented process helps AP protect cash, supplier balances, and the audit trail.
